Why this recipe works
This simple grilled side dish is one of my favorite go-to recipes for a quick and easy side for grilling season. The smokey char from grilled vegetables transforms them into something almost magical in just minutes.
Cooking broccolini on the grill is a great option because it needs almost no prep. Just a quick rinse and a toss in some oil and seasoning and it's read to go!
What is Broccolini?
If you're new to broccolini you way be wondering what is broccolini? What's the difference between broccolini and broccoli? Is broccolini just baby broccoli?
Broccolini is not young Broccoli at all! It's actually a hybrid plant that resulted from crossbreeding of traditional broccoli and the more leafy Chinese broccoli in Japan in the early 90's.
Broccolini has long thin stalks with loose florets at the top that turn into small yellow flowers when mature. Broccoli has shorter, much thicker stalks and larger tighter florets.
Broccolini is now grown in California and other Southwestern states and is typically available year round.
What does Broccolini taste like?
Broccolini is milder and slightly sweeter than broccoli, which tends to be more bittersweet. The mild flavor of Broccolini is perfect for simple seasoning, to let the fresh flavor shine. It is often served roasted, sauteed, grilled, or steamed.
