Why this recipe works

You can never have too many quick weeknight dinner recipes up your sleeve. And almost every home cook knows stir fry is one of the easiest and tastiest options for a weeknight meal.

They're ready in minutes, super flexible in terms of ingredients, and are a great way to use up leftover veggies and proteins in the fridge. Best of all, they typically have a delicious sauce!

This shrimp stir fry recipe is one of my family's favorite stir fry recipes for just that reason. The honey garlic stir fry sauce is AMAZING!

Ingredients

Honey Garlic Sauce

  • ¼ cup low sodium chicken broth or water
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Stir Fry

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • ½ medium red pepper
  • ½ medium green pepper
  • ½ medium yellow onion
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil (for stir frying)

How to make honey garlic stir fry sauce

This sweet and savory stir fry sauce is one of my favorite sauces. It is great on chicken, pork, and steak too. It's super simple to make with ingredients you probably have in your pantry.

If you don't have the ginger on hand, you can leave it out. It adds some brightness to the sauce, but it's still delicious without the ginger.

To make the sauce simply whisk together all of the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. You will use half as a marinade for the shrimp and half for the stir fry sauce. If you like a lot of sauce you can easily double it.

For a thicker sauce that clings to the shrimp and veggies, mix 2 Tablespoons of cold water and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and add to the sauce about 30 seconds after you add it to the pan.

How to cook the stir fry

  1. After making the sauce, add your peeled and deveined shrimp to a medium bowl or plastic bag and pour half of the marinade over top. Give the shrimp a toss and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat a large pan or wok over medium high heat then add 1 Tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the shrimp and discard the used marinade. Cook for 1-2 minutes, turning occasionally. The shrimp should be pink, but still slightly underdone. Remove the shrimp and transfer to a plate.
  3. Wipe the pan with a paper towel, then add the remaining oil and set to high heat. Add the vegetables and cook for 4 to 5 minutes just until softened.
  4. Add the shrimp back to the pan along with the remaining honey garlic sauce and cook for 2-3 minutes until the shrimp are fully cooked and the sauce is slightly reduced.

What to serve with Honey Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry

I typically serve stir fry with a side of white or brown steamed rice. Asian noodles like chow mein or lo mein are another good choice. You can also use cauliflower rice for a low carb option. Anything that will soak up the yummy sauce!

Recipe Tips and FAQs

Storage and reheating instruction

Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat leftovers in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until cooked through.

Can I use other veggies?

One great thing about any stir fry recipe is the flexibility. Almost any vegetables will work. Just be sure to cut them to a size that they will cook quickly. I typically always include peppers and onions as the base and add whatever I have on hand. Green beans, snow peas, asparagus, thin sliced carrots, or zucchini, are all great!

Can I make this spicy?

If you want to make spicy honey garlic shrimp add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper and 1 tablespoon sriracha to the marinade. Or if, you have chili garlic sauce (not sweet chili sauce) on hand, you can substitute 1-2 tablespoons of that for the minced garlic.
