Ingredient Notes
- Shrimp - To keep it quick and easy, I use large peeled and deveined shrimp in this shrimp stir fry.
- Veggies - A healthy, flavorful blend of broccoli, peppers, and onions help to make this a balanced meal.
- Sauce - No stir fry would be complete without a flavorful sauce. This honey garlic sauce is a perfect blend of sweet and savory.
How to Make the Honey Garlic Stir Fry Sauce
This honey garlic sauce is one of my favorite stir fry sauces. It is great on chicken, pork, and steak too. It's super simple to make with ingredients you probably have in your pantry.
To make the sauce simply whisk together all of the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. You will use half as a marinade for the shrimp and half for the stir fry sauce. If you like a lot of sauce you can easily double it.
For a thicker sauce that clings to the shrimp and veggies, mix 2 Tablespoons of cold water and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and add to the sauce about 30 seconds after you add it to the pan.
How to Cook Stir Fry
- Add your peeled and deveined shrimp to a medium bowl or plastic bag and pour half of the marinade over top. Give the shrimp a toss and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
- Heat a large pan or wok over medium high heat then add 1 Tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the shrimp and discard the used marinade. Cook for 1-2 minutes, turning occasionally. The shrimp should be pink, but still slightly underdone. Remove the shrimp and transfer to a plate.
- Wipe the pan with a paper towel, then add the remaining oil and set to high heat. Add the vegetables and cook for 4 to 5 minutes just until softened.
- Add the shrimp back to the pan with the remaining honey garlic sauce and cook for 2-3 minutes until the shrimp are fully cooked and the sauce is slightly reduced.
What to Serve with Honey Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry
I typically serve stir fry with a side of white or brown steamed rice. Asian noodles like chow mein or lo mein are another good choice. You can also use cauliflower rice for a low carb option. Anything that will soak up the yummy sauce!
Recipe Tips and FAQs
Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat leftovers in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until cooked through.
One great thing about any stir fry recipe is the flexibility. Almost any vegetables will work. Just be sure to cut them to a size that they will cook quickly. I typically always include peppers and onions as the base and add whatever I have on hand. Green beans, snow peas, asparagus, thin sliced carrots, or zucchini, are all great!
If you want to make spicy honey garlic shrimp add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper and 1 tablespoon sriracha to the marinade. Or if, you have chili garlic sauce (not sweet chili sauce) on hand, you can substitute 1-2 tablespoons of that for the minced garlic.
