Why this Recipe Works

Sausage balls are a Christmas favorite in my family. If you're not familiar with them, they're kind of like a one-bite sausage and cheese biscuit They're a perfect bite-sized appetizer that's full of flavor. Best of all, they're super easy to make with just a few simple ingredients!

Ingredient Notes

  • Sausage - Traditionally ground pork breakfast sausage is used in sausage balls. This is the tube-shaped uncased sausage, not links in the casing. But you can easily change up the flavor using other varieties such as maple flavored or spicy sausage. Other varieties such as Italian sausage or turkey sausage will work too.
  • Cheese - Sharp cheddar is the classic choice, but you can switch it up if you prefer. Gruyere and pepper jack are good options. I do recommend shredding your own cheese when making sausage balls. It will melt better than store-bought shredded cheese.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine the shredded cheese and Bisquick mix in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the sausage to the bowl and use your hands to break it up into small pieces and mix it in with the cheese and Bisquick until well combined. Stir in the milk to moisten the mixture.

How to Make Sausage Balls without Bisquick

Bisquick mix is a mixture of flour, fat, and leavener, and you can easily make a homemade version and skip the boxed mix.

To make sausage balls with no Bisquick, you will need 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 Tablespoon plus two teaspoons of baking powder, and 3 tablespoons of butter.

Stir together the flour and baking powder, then cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter or two forks until small crumbs form. Then proceed as directed by mixing in the cheese, sausage, and milk and then baking.

Recipe Tips and FAQs

How to store sausage balls

Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days. Warm them in the microwave before serving.

Can I freeze sausage balls?

Yes, you can freeze sausage balls uncooked or cooked. Uncooked sausage balls can be frozen for around 2 month. You can cook them right from frozen. Just add around 5-10 minutes to the cooking time.

Cooked sausage balls can be frozen for 1-2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes to warm.
